Increase organic traffic with WordPress Plugins by extending the functionality of your blog.  By incorporating features that were already available, and/or adding new features to your blog, it is easy to enhance your on-page SEO efforts and boost organic traffic with improved organic search results.  Below are five WordPress plugins to get you started.

Increase Organic Traffic with Akismet

A goal that you should have for your blog is to optimize organic search results and boost organic website and blog traffic.  However, not all traffic is good traffic.

Akismet is a spam filtering service that filters link spam from blog comments and spam TrackBack pings.  Akismet was designed to significantly reduce, and in some cases, completely eliminate spam comments and trackbacks to a website or blog. Akismet is intelligent in the sense that if spam does get through, a user simply marks it as “spam” and Akismet will learn.

Technically, Akismet states that comments are checked against the Akismet web service to determine if the comment looks like spam.  Then, Akismet lets the user determine whether or not the comment is spam by capturing the comments in the “Comments” section of the admin screen.  The Akismet filter combines information about spam captured on all participating blogs, and then generates and operationalizes those spam rules to block future spam.

Some of the features of Akismet include:

  • A comment status history that enables an administrator or user to easily see the comments that were blocked or cleared, as well as those that were spammed or un-spammed by a moderator.
  • Links are highlighted in the comment body to reveal hidden or misleading links
  • If a web host is unable to connect with Akismet’s servers, the plugin automatically retries when a connection is established, eliminating the need for manual intervention.
  • In the dashboard, moderators can easily view the number of approved comments for each user.
  • Akismet provides reports for Spam and Unspam reports that are actionable, thereby improving accuracy.

Other vendors that offer competing products include Mollom, Defensio and Typepad Antispam.

Convert Organic Traffic with LeadPlayer

LeadPlayer is a great way to capture contact information from your blog traffic.

In general, while a lot of investment goes into creating a video (a script, filming, editing, uploading, optimizing, promoting, etc.), satisfactory conversion metrics may not exist to determine leads, downloads or sales.  For instance, when placing a video on YouTube a content creator may add a URL in the description or communicate something in the video itself at some point. However, these attempts to capture information or direct blog traffic may increate “friction” between the web visitor and the desired behavior, reducing the opportunity for engagement.

Increase Organic Traffic LeadPlayerWith LeadPlayer, an opt-in form can appear before the video begins to play, in the middle or at the end of the video—it’s the users’ call.  This form can be as minimal as one likes. In addition, the user decides whether it is mandatory or not to view the video.

LeadPlayer can be used for opting–in by requiring blog traffic to opt-in to continue watching a video.
Opt-in boxes can also be set up within videos. And, the placement of the opt-in boxes can appear at the beginning, middle or end of the video.

LeadPlayer can also be used as a Call-to-Action (CTA).  Here, one creates buttons (all button texts and links are customizable) that appear during the videos and direct viewers to a webpage, blog, landing page, etc.

LeadPlayer has YouTube integration (add CTA’s to all YouTube videos), video analytics (engagement statistics) and player customization (enable or disable auto start, hide timeline).

Here’s why LeadPlayer is great for list building and increasing sales with video:

  • Easily create opt-In boxes anywhere in a video.
  • Fully customized call to action buttons lead visitors anywhere one wants.
  • Video analytics highlight when the content is engaging, geo-locates visitors and projects sales.
  • Ability to customize a visitor’s experience and integrate with Aweber, mailchimp and PayPal.
  • Full integration with YouTube—one can even use other people’s YouTube videos and add LeadPlayer to capture leads.
  • Leadplayer allows oneto choose his or her own thumbnail as opposed to an automatic frame grab that may be distorted.
  • LeadPlayer automatically re-sizes videos for mobile devices

WordPress Backup to Dropbox is a plugin for WordPress that automatically uploads a backup of an entire website, including all files and its database, to Dropbox. It provides peace of mind that a website is backed up on a regular basis, in a secure, automated manner.

One simply selects a day, time of day and frequency of how often the backup should occur for the website or blog files. An SQL dump of the corresponding database will then be backed up to Dropbox as well.  Users can specify the specific location to backup files on Dropbox and what specific files or directories, if any, that should be excluded from the backup.

Increase Organic Traffic with WordPress SEO by Yoast

WordPress SEO by Yoast optimizes a blog by improving on-page SEO.  The WordPress SEO plugin accomplishes this by enhancing organic search results through on-page SEO optimization and that will positively impact organic traffic to your blog. The plugin is easy to use and install and does a great job of addressing the technical optimization elements.

WordPress SEO forces the user to choose a focus keyword when writing articles, and then ensures that focus keyword is optimized for the post or page.  The plugin analyzes the post or page based on a focus keyword. It looks at the URL, title, description, content, and more to make sure the post has a clear SEO focus.

The WordPress SEO plug-in’s page analysis functionality checks simple things many people are bound to forget. It checks, for instance, if there are images in the post and whether they have an alt tag containing the focus keyword for that post. It also checks whether posts are long enough, if a meta description was written, if that meta description contains the focus keyword, if any subheadings were used within the post, etc.

Write with SEO in Mind

The snippet preview is a great way to see the exact rendering of what a post or page will look like in the search results.  At this point, it is easy to assess whether a title is too long (keywords not appearing) or too short (not enough keywords or context) and whether the meta description makes sense in the context of a search result. Following these tips will not only increase  blog posts page rankings and organic traffic but may also increase the click through rate to a blog which will positively impact organic search results.

Page Analysis

The Linkdex Page Analysis functionality is a great checklist of on-page SEO fundamentals.  If there are images in the blog post, a flag is in place to ensure that there is an alt tag containing the focus keyword for the blog post.  There is also a check for keyword density to optimize the number of times the focus keyword appears in the post and another to validate that the slug for the page is the optimal size.

Technical WordPress Search Engine Optimization

While out of the box WordPress is pretty good for SEO, it needs some tweaks here and there to positively impact organic traffic. This WordPress SEO plugin guides the user through some of the settings needed, for instance by reminding one to enable pretty permalinks. But it also goes beyond that, by automatically optimizing and inserting the meta tags and link elements that Google and other search engines like.

Meta & Link Elements

A user can control which pages Google shows in its organic search results and which pages are to be excluded. By default, the plugin will tell search engines to index all blog pages, including category and tag archives, but it will only show the first pages in the search results.

XML Sitemaps

WordPress SEO has advanced XML Sitemaps functionality. Once the box is checked, the plugin automatically creates XML sitemaps and notifies Google and other search engines of the sitemaps’ existence. The XML sitemaps include not only images in blog posts but blog pages too.  Images are important as they are appearing more and more in Google searches and can lead to increased referral traffic.
